A circular mil is the area of a circle which has the diameter of a mil. A mil is a thousandth of an inch or .001 inch.

Circular mils are given for all AWG conductors in Chapter 9 of the NEC.

Note Circular mils divided by 1,273,200 equals square inches.

Circular mils times .7854 equal square mils.
